The Halligan is a cocktail and wine bar at Hotel Indigo Auckland, overlooking St Patrick's Square. Working alongside creative agency Culture, I was brought in to shoot photos and video for the venue.
The brief
Capture the vibe of the place. The Halligan is all warm, low light, a back bar glowing with bottles, and bartenders who put on a bit of a show. The goal was to make people feel what it's like to walk in on a busy night, not just show them a room.
Shooting the space
We worked with the venue's own moody lighting rather than fighting it, keeping the deep shadows and amber highlights that give the bar its character. On the bartender shaking a cocktail, a slower shutter keeps the movement and energy in the frame, while the drinks, menus and details are shot tight with soft, shallow focus.
Gear
We ran two camera setups: the Sony A7R V with the 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master II for the room, details and the signage, and the Sony A7 IV with the 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master II for candid moments of guests and staff.
The video
Alongside the stills, I shot video content, which Culture edited into the reel below.
